How much does a lasting power of attorney cost?

Reviewed 3 November 2026 · England and Wales

In short

Registering a lasting power of attorney costs £92 per LPA paid to the Office of the Public Guardian, or £184 for both types. You can apply to pay half, or nothing, if the donor earns under £12,000 a year or receives certain benefits. Making the LPA itself can be free if you do it yourself; solicitors typically charge £300 to £1,000 on top of the registration fee.

The cost of an LPA has two parts: the government registration fee, which everyone pays, and the cost of preparing the document, which depends on whether you do it yourself, use a service, or instruct a solicitor.

The OPG registration fee

Every LPA must be registered with the Office of the Public Guardian before it can be used. The registration fee is £92 per LPA (it rose from £82 on 17 November 2025). As there are two types of LPA, registering both costs £184.

The registration fee is always paid to the OPG, not to a preparation service. Any price LPASafe quotes is for preparing and checking your LPA, and is separate from the £92.

Paying a reduced fee or nothing

If the donor (the person making the LPA) is on a low income or certain benefits, they can apply for help with the fee when they register:

  • Income under £12,000 a year: apply to pay half, so £46 per LPA.
  • Certain means-tested benefits (for example Income Support, income-based ESA or JSA, Guarantee Credit): apply for a full exemption, so nothing to pay.
  • You apply using form LPA120A and send evidence with your registration.

The cost of preparing the LPA

The official LP1F and LP1H forms are free to download from gov.uk, so a pure do-it-yourself LPA costs only the registration fee. The trade-off is that roughly 1 in 11 LPAs are rejected, usually for avoidable errors, and a rejection means waiting again.

A preparation service sits between free DIY and a solicitor: you get the form completed correctly for a fixed fee, far below solicitor prices. LPASafe's Done-For-You service is £89 per LPA, completing the official form from your answers against the OPG rejection criteria, backed by our No-Rejection Promise.

Frequently asked questions

Is the £92 fee per LPA or in total?

It is per LPA. If you make both a property and financial affairs LPA and a health and welfare LPA, you pay £92 for each, so £184 in total.

Can I get the LPA fee waived?

You can apply for a reduced fee (£46) if the donor earns under £12,000 a year, or a full exemption if they receive certain means-tested benefits. You apply with form LPA120A when you register.

Why do solicitors charge so much more?

Solicitors charge for their time and advice, typically £300 to £1,000 per LPA. For a straightforward LPA, a preparation service that completes the form correctly from your answers gives you most of the safety at a fraction of the cost.

Does LPASafe charge the £92 as well?

No. The £92 is paid directly to the Office of the Public Guardian when you register. LPASafe's fee is only for preparing and checking your LPA, and we always show the OPG fee separately.
